Acute Intestinal Obstruction Secondary to Obturator Hernia- A Rare Case

Obturator hernia is a rare type of abdominal wall hernias, generally occur in thin and old women with chronic illness. They are associated with high rate of mortality and morbidity, diagnosis is often late as they don’t have specific symptoms or findings and are a challenge to the surgeon. Mostly present with intestinal obstruction features. Early surgical intervention is usually delayed due to lack of preoperative clues for diagnosis. Our study shows a similar case of a thin, elderly female with obstructed obturator hernia and discusses the difficulties in diagnosis and management of such cases and reviews recent literature.

Anti-Osteoporotic Activities of Plant Acalypha Indica Extracts

Acalypha Indica is a species of plant having catkin type of inflorescence. It occurs throughout tropical Africa and South Africa, in India and Sri Lanka, as well as in Yemen and Pakistan. This plant is held in high esteem in traditional Tamil siddha and medicine as it is believed to rejuvenate the body. Pharmacological investigation has shown that the plant has potent anti- bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-arthritic, anti-osteoporotic, anti-oxidant, neuroprotective, wound healing, post-coital antifertility activities. The present review article attempt to summarize the anti- osteoporotic activity of the plant.

Prevalence of thyroid disorders in Gestational Diabetes mellitus (GDM) : A tertiary centre study

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and especially pregestational diabetes mellitus, are known as risk factors for pregnancy complications, effecting both the mother and the fetus. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of the thyroid disorders in pregnant women with gestation diabetes mellitus (GDM). A study on the prevalence and possible risk factors associated with gestational diabetes was undertaken on 100 mothers between the age group of 20 and 35 years; among pregnant women recruited from Gynecology and Obstrectics outpatient of S.M.S Medical College, Jaipur, Rajasthan from January 2016 to January 2017. In this study 100 women were divided in two groups, Group I (n=50) were control group (non gestational diabetic) and Group II (n=50) was study group (gestational diabetic). In present study maximum subjects 35 (70%) seen in control group and 31 (62%) in study group in 25-32 years of age group. The prevalence of thyroid disorder (hypothyroidism) in gestational diabetes females was 12%. In comparisons to control group, women with gestational diabetes and hypothyroidism were statistically significant (p=0.229*). Thyroid dysfunction is prevalent in women with GDM so, thyroid function should be evaluated in these patients during pregnancy. Moreover, the lack of information regarding how tight the thyroid function and glucose concentrations were under control and the BMI of the patients may also serve as possible confounding factors.

Stability indicating Analytical Method Development and Validation for the Estimation of Vorinostat Using RP-HPLC Method

A simple and effective RP-HPLC method had been developed for the estimation of vorinostat in capsule, using Apollo C18 (4.6 x 150mm, 5mm), mobile phase 100% methanol, detection wavelength at 247 nm, at flow rate of 1ml/min at retention time 3.43 min for vorinostat. Linearity was obtained in the range of 5µg/ml to 25µg/ml for vorinostat. The correlation coefficient was found to be 0.999. The Recovery studies were performed for vorinostat in the range of 50% - 150 %. The % Assay for vorinostat is 99.85 % .Forced Degradation studies were conducted according to the ICH guidelines and the Drug Product was found to be stable in all conditions. Hence, the method could be successfully applied for routine analysis of vorinostat capsules.

Anti Proliferative Effect of Fungal Polysaccharide on Hela and MCF-7 Cell Lines

Chitosan (N-acetyl D- glucosamine) is a natural polysaccharide present in crustacean shells, some fungi and yeast. It is a versatile polysaccharide irrespective of its sources. In the present research work, fungal chitosan is characterized for its anti proliferative effect on HeLa and MCF-7 tumour cell lines by MTT assay. The results showed that GI50 of fungal chitosan was found to be 75µg/ml and 80µg/ml on HeLa and MCF-7 cells respectively.

While the jury is still out on the true impact of prenatal exposure to Mozart and Bach, preliminary research appears to indicate that the unborn child might enjoy and benefit slightly from a daily dose of music. This article attempts to review the effect of music on prenatal babies, the published studies on the theoretical effect and its application in pregnant women.

Novelistic Frontiers in Fusogenic Liposomal Drug Delivery system: An Outlook

The term liposomes (i.e. lipid body) is derived on the basis of names of sub cellular particles like lysosome and ribosomes. It is a sphere vesicle of lipid bilayers enclosing an aqueous compartment. The lipid most commonly used is phospholipids. Because of their availability in various sizes, ability to incorporate both water as well as oil soluble drugs, their inertness and their ability to protect labile drugs, liposomes are versatile carriers for parenteral drug delivery system. Liposomes have been realized as extremely useful carrier systems, additives and tools in various scientific domains. Liposomes over the years have been investigated as the major drug delivery systems due to their flexibility to be tailored for varied desirable purposes. They can be administrated parenterally, topically, by inhalation and possibly by other routes of administration, but the current products are administrated parenterally. Fusogenic liposomes are specially engineered liposomes that fuse and merge with cell membranes and directly introduce molecules (entrapped or anchored) into cytoplasm thus avoiding the route followed by conventional liposonmes, i.e., internalization via endocytic compartments into lysosomes. The fusogenic liposomes mimic the way by which several viruses (HIV, Sendai virus) bind and merge with cell membranes at neutral pH and subsequently release their genome into the cytoplasm.
