Phytochemical evaluation of some Salvia species from Ukrainian flora

Olha Semenchenko
10/1/2014

The genus Salvia, composed of more than 900 species worldwide distributed, is well known for its various uses, including therapeutic ones. Many species within the genus exhibit activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial etc. The chemical composition of these species includes polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenes, which induce such activities. The present study compares the polyphenolcarboxilic acids and flavonoids content of 3 species of Salvia present in Ukrainian flora, including S. patens L. and S. verticillata L. Using a HPLC method, polyphenolcarboxilic acids and flavonoid compounds were determined in S. officinalis L., S. patens L. and S. verticillata L.

Screening for Antimicrobial efficacy of phytochemicals extracted from two medicinally important plants of Cucurbitaceae

Renu Sarin*1 and Sangeeta Samariya
3/1/2014

Medicinal plants are being popular these days to cure diseases due to rapid increase in the rate of infectious diseases day by day and their less side effects over synthetic antibiotics. In the present study two medicinally important plants of family cucurbitaceae vis. Luffa cylindrica Linn. and Citrullus colocynthis Linn. Leaf, stem and calli phytochemical extracts viz. alkaloids, flavonoids and sterols were evaluated against some pathogenic strains of bacteria and fungi viz. Staphylococcus epidermis (MTCC 3615), Micromona spora (MTCC 3296), Fusarium culmorum (MTCC349), Alternaria solani (MTCC 2101), Penicillium chrysogenum (MTCC 161). The antibacterial and antifungal activities were performed by Disc diffusion method. The  on the basis of inhibition zone(IZ) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).Among all the extracts sterol extracts of both the plant species showed highest antimicrobial activity. Results obtained in the present study indicate Luffa cylindrical Linn. and Citrullus colocynthis Linn. Leaf, stem and calli phytochemical extracts viz. alkaloids, flavonoids and sterols possesses antimicrobial properties that can be exploited for future natural plant based antimicrobial agents.

In-Vitro Antioxidant Activity and Determination of Total Phenolic, Flavonoid Contents of Peperomia Pellucida Linn

Leena K.Pappachen and Annam Chacko
10/1/2013

Peperomia Pellucida Linn (Piperaceae) has been traditionally used for the treatment of various ailments such as abdominal pain, acne, boils, colic, fatigue, gout, headache, renal disorders, and rheumatic joint pain. Preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of phenols and flavonoids in P.Pellucida. Thus the present study, aims to determine the in vitro antioxidant activity and to estimate the phenolic and flavonoid content in the methanolic extract of the whole plant of  Peperomia Pellucida Linn .Total phenolic content (TPC) was estimated using Folin-Ciocalteau’s reagent and total flavonoid (TF) content by Aluminium chloride colorimetric method. DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl), ABTS (2, 2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid )and nitric oxide scavenging method were carried out to evaluate  the in vitro antioxidant activity.  Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were found to be 3.91g gallic acid equivalent per 100 g and 5.80g quercetin equivalent per 100 g of methanolic extract respectively by spectrophotometric method.IC50 value of methanolic extract of Peperomia Pellucida Linn were found to be  351.56±0.21μg/ml ,76.51±0.19μg/ml and 282.30±0.42μg/ml respectively in DPPH, ABTS and nitric oxide scavenging assays . These primary findings suggest that the methanol extract of  P.Pellucida Linn possess phenolic and flavonoid constituents that are responsible for antioxidant activity.
